What is the Strip 1 Tysons Project?
Washington Gas is constructing new infrastructure to improve the delivery, safety, and reliability of natural gas service in Fairfax County and the entire Washington Gas service area. In 2012, we began working to upgrade the infrastructure in the Tysons area. We started at Tyco Road, crossed the Capital Beltway, and now we are connecting the infrastructure to a new regulator station at the Pimmit Hills Center located at 7510 Lisle Avenue in Falls Church. The entire project spans approximately five miles in length, mostly within public right-of-ways. This project is a priority since this portion of the system in the area is one of our oldest, installed in 1948.
What is Washington Gas doing to work with the community during construction?
We are taking a number of steps to work with the community including:
- Utilizing a full-time Community Outreach Team to work with the Pimmit Hills neighborhood;
- Accelerating operations whenever possible to reduce the length of construction;
- Constructing in stages (by block) whenever possible to reduce traffic impacts;
- Condensing work hours to avoid high commuter times, including school traffic; and
- Paving affected streets when construction is complete.

The Community Outreach team will be providing new and current advisories regularly. By joining the Information Network, you will receive information regarding the project that may be important to you. Your name will not be shared and only used for update purposes on the operations of the project.

How long will the project last?
Construction is scheduled to begin around July 21.
- This is a two-year project, but construction can only occur each year from April 1 until October 31.
What are the hours of construction?
Construction and staging will typically begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until 3:30 p.m. from Monday through Thursday and between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Friday. If there is an occasional need for work on a Saturday, residents along the route will be notified in advance.
If I live along the construction route, what can I expect?
For residents along the construction route, the Project Manager and Community Outreach Team will regularly communicate with residents, businesses, and area schools. We will provide information by visiting door to door, sending mailings and E-blasts, and hosting block meetings before construction with the residents on the streets where work will be proceeding.
How will residents and property owners receive information?
Washington Gas and partner agencies will communicate through:
- Website;
- Advisories;
- Email Updates;
- Mailers and Door Hangers; and
- Block Meetings.
Who is my point of contact during construction?

What construction impacts should residents expect?
Residents may experience:
- Temporary parking restrictions;
- Periodic lane closures or detours;
- Construction noise during permitted work hours; and
- Temporary changes to pedestrian or driveway access.
Construction crews will coordinate with you to provide notice of these possible impacts and to maintain access to homes, churches, and businesses.
What is the specific plan that will be in place to allow cars to move back and forth?
Residents will be notified in advance if their driveway or walkway will be obstructed. Should a car need to be moved during this time, residents should alert the construction team on-site, who will take action.
What happens if my property is damaged?
Washington Gas is responsible for restoration related to its work.
If damage occurs:
- Property owners can file a claim with Washington Gas’ insurance provider;
- The project team will share clear instructions on how to submit a claim; and
- Washington Gas will track the restoration work to completion.
During construction, will crew members need to be on anyone’s yard?
All construction will be completed on public property. No private property will be disturbed.
Will residents lose gas service during construction?
No service disruptions are expected.
